The Nigeria Customs Service, Area Command 1 Port Harcourt, has intercepted four consignments valued at N112.68 million illegally imported into the country.
The Comptroller, Ibrahim Muhammad, said this was at the command port terminal in Port Harcourt.
He said the shipment included four containers with 2,965 gallons of vegetable oil.
“Following credible intelligence, some contraband was found and investigation revealed that the containers were mostly vegetable oil hidden in ceramic tiles, and some household utensils.
“According to this, the four containers were seized, the investigation is ongoing, we know that the agent is licensed and customs has control over the operation.
“The case of confiscation has been reported on time while we are waiting for a faster report after the investigation is over,” said Muhammad.
The police chief also said that 481 bales of used clothes, 700 packs of knives and 107 packs of shovels also made the seizure list.
He said some items like vegetable oil and second-hand clothes are contraband, shovels and machetes are being held pending End User Certificate from the Office of the Security Adviser, mainly due to their sensitivity to the upcoming general election.
The comptroller also said the command generated a total of N92.32 billion in 2022, a 12 percent increase to the N81.31 billion revenue generated in 2021.
Muhammad attributed the increase in revenue to money generated from Port Harcourt International Airport and Excise duty from International Brewery and Nigeria Bottling Company.
