A coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) has taken over the Garki modern market in Abuja in a bid to sensitize market men and women on the importance of the cashless policy introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Although traders in the market expressed concern over the non-availability of redesigned naira notes in banks and the rejection of old naira notes by clients, the CSOs leaders called for all the old notes in banks before January 31. directed by CBN.

Speaking, the President of the Civil Society Coalition on Good Governance, (CCSGG), Bassey Etuk told the traders that if the CBN decided not to extend the January 31 deadline for the implementation of the new policy, it should be scrapped. with old naira notes so they don’t expire.

Etuk who asserted that the implementation of the policy will strengthen the Nigerian economy said the cashless policy has remained.

He said: “We support the policy by the CBN Governor, and we will educate other Nigerians about the policy because it is for their good and well-being including unborn Nigerians.”

“The CBN has ordered all banks not to put old naira notes into Automated Teller Machines (ATMs). When you go to an ATM machine, what you will find now are new naira notes. And that is why the CBN has come boldly to tell all Nigerians that the deadline for you and I return all the notes is January 31, which is next week, Tuesday.

“There is no need to take advice from anyone except what the CBN says. Go to your banks. Find your banks to give you new naira notes.

A Point Of Sale (POS) operator who identified himself as Mohammed Jegu in an interview lamented the rate at which customers reject old naira notes at his stand, maintaining that the new notes are not available in banks.

He called on the federal government and the CBN to extend the expiry date of the old naira notes until the new notes are complete.
