Roy Hodgson has been reappointed as Crystal Palace manager until the end of the season.
Hodgson, 75, returned to manage his boyhood club for a second term after Palace sacked Patrick Vieira last week following a run of 12 games without a win.
The former England manager takes over with Palace struggling for Premier League survival, sitting three points above the relegation zone with 10 games to go.
Hodgson said: “It’s a privilege to be asked to return to the club, which has always meant a lot to me, and to be given the important task of turning around the team’s fortunes and getting the points we need to secure our Premier League status.
Palace’s next game is at home to Leicester when the Premier League resumes after the international break on April 1.
Hodgson has been appointed despite saying last May, when he will end his short spell in charge of Watford: “I don’t think that my name will be put forward again for another story in the world of Premier League football.”
Paddy McCarthy, who took caretaker charge of the Eagles’ 4-1 defeat at Arsenal on Sunday, will become Hodgson’s assistant manager while Ray Lewington returns as first-team coach. Dean Kiely will continue as Crystal Palace’s goalkeeping coach.
Chairman Steve Parish added: “I am happy to welcome Roy and Ray back to the club. We are obviously in a very challenging period but we believe that the experience of Roy and Ray, the knowledge of the club and the players, in addition to Paddy can help fulfill the requirements to keep us in the league. “
Analysis: Palace have no time to take risks
Sky Sports News reporter Michael Bridge:
“Steve Parish has gone with Roy Hodgson because short-term he knows what he brings. I spoke to Palace fans after Vieira was sacked and they wanted Marcelo Bielsa.
“I said, ‘Bielsa, for the last 10 games?’ That’s not the case, we know about it when we talk about the Everton project.
“Roy Hodgson knows the club inside out and there was a shot when he came back to Palace as manager of Watford and you felt yourself thinking, ‘This is my home’.
“We spoke to him about the transfer window in January and he said when he talked about Palace, he only liked the football club. He spoke highly of Wilfried Zaha and the players we have now.
“They say that the table doesn’t lie but like this season about a team that is around 12th, they don’t have time to take risks. Steve Parish will look at this and think, ‘I have a fantastic working and personal relationship with Roy Hodgson’ and it seems jek is the best move for him now.
“You could tell in January he didn’t retire. He wanted one more.”
