New Mexico prosecutors said Thursday they will dismiss an involuntary manslaughter charge against actor Alec Baldwin stemming from the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of a Western movie. Rust in 2021.
Special prosecutors Kari Morrissey and Jason Lewis said in a statement that their office will conduct a further investigation and charges may be filed again.
Baldwin, 65, was charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter in January in connection with Hutchins’ death and injury Rust director Joel Souza, who was also shot.
The actor was accused of showing “recklessness” for safety in Hutchins’ death. He pleaded not guilty in February after prosecutors downgraded the charges, reducing the potential for prison time.
“We are pleased with the decision to cancel the case against Alec Baldwin and we encourage a proper investigation into the facts and circumstances of this tragic accident,” Lukas Nikas and Alex Spiro, lawyers for Baldwin, said in a statement.
The first assistant director on the set, Dave Halls, was sentenced last month to a suspended sentence after pleading guilty to negligent use of a deadly weapon. Prosecutors said he was responsible for the safety of the set.
The film’s author, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, also faces murder charges and has pleaded not guilty.
