Conservative CNN commentator SE Cupp on Wednesday launched the annual Conservative Political Action Conference with a new moniker: “Donald Trump’s Family Variety Hour.”
Cupp broke down how the “once mandatory event” for national Republicans has “broken and corroded” since Trump took over the GOP.
This week will roll out in Maryland with “no bang, much less,” he predicted, noting the absence of high-profile Republicans and the scheduled attendance of Trump and members of his family.
CPAC faced further turmoil because Matt Schlapp, chairman of the American Conservative Union, which organized the conference, faced allegations that he groped a Republican staff, which he denied, noted Cupp.
But it’s the Trump element that has become a “joke,” he said.
It seems to be just “a vehicle for Trump and Trumpism and no longer a … stopping point for the presidency,” he added.
