Magistrate Court in Port Harcourt, River State has been remanded Ephraim NwuziThe All Progressives Congress candidate for Etche-Omuma Federal Constituency in Saturday’s election at the Nigerian Correctional Center in the state.
Mr. Nwuzi, a serving Member of Parliament, represents Etche/Omuma Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
He was charged with treasonable crimes, conspiracy, communal crisis movement and incitement to violence, Punch newspaper reported.
The MP was charged by the police in the country. He was arrested on Wednesday after the court denied him bail. The prosecution prayed the court to remand the lawmaker to pave the way for a proper investigation.
Mr. Nwuzi will spend 10 days in a correctional facility, which means he cannot participate in the election in which he is a candidate.
The lawmaker, according to Punch newspaper, was arrested on Wednesday at his home in Chokocho, Etche Local Government Area by some police officers who allegedly broke into his apartment.
Police spokesperson in the state, Grace Iringe-Koko, in a statement, said the police summoned the lawmaker over a shocking video in which he allegedly instructed his supporters to attack several people, including officials from the state. Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during the election.
Mr. Nwuzi’s counsel, Emenike Ebete told reporters outside court that the offense preferred against his client was not enough to warrant his detention.

“We have also submitted to the court that the offenses disclosed in the particulars and the affidavit attached to the charges are not sufficient for his further detention.
“The court in its discretion declared that the offense was serious and he should be remanded in prison until March 3, 2023, pending when the prosecution will be preferred by the state,” said Mr. Ebete.
