The Ministry of Transport said the total amount spent on finding Christmas inspiration for Kotoka International Airport in December 2021 is GH¢128,366.

The ministry said, out of this figure, DDP Outdoor Services Limited paid GH¢50,000 in terms of sponsorship.

Appearing in Parliament to answer a question posed by a member of the House of Representatives, the Minister of Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah said “Christmas decorations at Kotoka International Airport for 2021 were hired from a company and the total cost of decorations is GH¢128,366, of which GH¢50,000 was paid by DDP in terms of sponsorship.

Public attention was first drawn to Christmas decorations by social media users who complained that GACL was spending too much on Christmas decorations while staff salaries were in arrears.

A response to a Right to Information request made to the Ministry of Transport by the Fourth Estate on the matter at June 2022 indicates that the transaction is not taken up in any procurement process due to the nature of the transaction.

The Ministry of Transport at the time said there was no procurement or bidding process to award the contract as the decorations were leased.

“Please be informed that the Christmas decorations for 2021 are leased and not purchased by GACL. Therefore, there is no procurement or auction process to award the contract,” the Ministry of Transport said.
