Rep. Angie Craig (D-Minn.) described how her “morning coffee” played a role in saving her from additional injuries during the attack in her Washington, DC, apartment building on Friday morning.
Craig’s comments came a day after the attacker approached Craig in the elevator and prevented him from leaving before “he punched him on the left side of his face, striking his chin. [and] mouth area with a closed fist,” according to a US Capitol Police affidavit reported by CBS News.
The attacker grabbed the Minnesota Democrat by the collarbone, the affidavit said, before pouring a cup of coffee on him. He then left the building.
The congresswoman suffered bruises in the attack but is otherwise “physically OK,” her chief of staff, Nick Coe, said Monday.
Craig, in a statement on Friday, thanked the support and described himself as lucky after the attack.
“My morning coffee really saved my day yesterday, but not as much as I’d hoped,” Craig wrote.
“On a serious note, I will say that I am very, very lucky that I am not more injured – and I will talk about it again.”
Craig added that he is recovering from the attack at his home in Minnesota on Friday.
DC Police have arrested and charged 26-year-old Kendrick Hamlin in connection with the attack.
Hamlin is expected to face federal criminal charges and will appear in court on Monday evening, according to CBS News.
There is no evidence that the attack was politically motivated, Coe said Thursday.
