Lawyers for the columnist who won a $5 million US sex and defamation award against former US president Donald Trump filed an amended lawsuit against him Monday, holding him accountable for what he said after the verdict.
The amended lawsuit, seeking at least $10 million in punitive damages, was filed in Manhattan federal court by lawyers for E. Jean Carroll, who said Trump’s comments after he made rape allegations against her so damaged her reputation that she lost her longtime job. . is an advice columnist for Elle magazine.
A nine-person jury two weeks ago ruled that Trump had sexually assaulted Carroll at a Manhattan department store in the early spring of 1996.
Carroll, who testified during the trial, initially revealed that she was raped by Trump in the dressing room of the 2019 book, but the jury rejected the claim.
Joe Tacopina, Trump’s attorney, declined to comment on the new lawsuit.
After years of calling CNN ‘fake news,’ Donald Trump held a campaign town hall on the network. It comes just days after a jury found that Trump, the current front-runner in the Republican primary race, sexually harassed and defamed columnist E. Jean Carroll.
Lawyer says Trump ‘constantly undermines Carroll’
Carroll’s lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, filed a new lawsuit to amend the defamation lawsuit that was put on hold because an appeals court ruled that Trump can be held liable for remarks made in 2019 while he was still president.
The US Department of Justice supported the demands of the lawyers that the United States should be replaced as a defendant.
In a new statement, Carroll’s attorney said Trump, “unfazed by the jury’s verdict, continued to vilify Carroll again” the next day during a town hall event hosted by CNN.
“He doubled down on his previous slanderous statement, insisting to the audience all ready to cheer him that ‘I have never met this woman. It was only validated by a jury of Trump’s associates the day before – there is a ‘false,'” story made’ invented by ‘whack work.’ His statement elicited enthusiastic cheers and applause from the audience on live TV,” the lawyer wrote.
