Climate change: NIMET raises concern on continuous rise in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere | The Guardian Nigeria News

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has raised concerns over the rising concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere with devastating global consequences.

The agency is concerned that with global climate change, it is clear that no country in the world is immune to the effects of climate change, whether it is an emitter or a non-emitter of these gases.

Director General of NiMet, Prof. Mansur Matazu in his keynote speech at the commemoration of the World Meteorological Day yesterday in Abuja, reflected that the world has experienced storms that destroy several international boundaries in their life cycle.

He therefore explained, echoing the importance of cooperation at the core of WMO’s existence. “Indeed, what has happened over the years has taught us that the weather has no boundaries.”

Matazu, speaking at the event, with the theme: The Future of Weather, Climate and Water in Generations, said: “As you know, every year on March 23, the World celebrates Meteorology Day.

“This ‘day’ commemorates since March 23, 1950 the Convention establishing the World Meteorological Organization.”

According to Matazu, Before this date, the International Meteorological Organization has existed since 1873, as a cooperation of international bodies or institutions that work together tirelessly, exchange data and make forecasts for the good of all.

“This cooperation has been strengthened since the establishment of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Over the years, society and science have developed.

Speaking further, NiMet boss, represented by NiMet Director, Research and Training Prof. Effiom Oku, continued: “Technology has allowed us to modernize the way activities are carried out in a more concise and efficient way. We have witnessed the transition from analog society to digital, and the evolution is expected to continue. In the same way, the world climate has changed from variability to change while variability still continues in different climate environments.

“The global climate continues to warm as countries struggle to adjust to the reality of combating climate change amid economic gains.

“As an organization of 187 Member States and 6 Member Regions, WMO requires that all its members will act with a common vision and purpose. Therefore, the World Meteorological Day provides an opportunity for member countries to combine ideas and resources; and align in one common thematic area.

“The day” shows the important contribution of the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHss) such as NiMet and NIHSA (Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency) to the safety and well-being of the public and is celebrated with activities around the world.”

“Therefore, when we work hard to improve our activities, we must not forget to prepare the next generation for the tasks that will be carried out.”
