Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (DNY) on Friday said that while he has worked with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) to deliver for the American people, House Republicans have focused on creating “another mess” and promoting “proposals” Ultra MAGA.
In a letter to his fellow Senate Democrats, Schumer blamed the House GOP for focusing on appeasing members of the party’s right wing. McCarthy had to offer those members, including Reps. Matt Gaetz (Fla.) and Lauren Boebert (Colo.), concessions to win the speaker vote last week.
“I hope non-MAGA Republicans will reject the extremists in their party and work with us to produce real results,” Schumer wrote.
He continued: “But if the Republicans follow the extreme wing of the party off the cliff and continue to fight against those who refuse to vote and those who threaten our democracy and help the rich at the expense … The American people that we will resist the attack.
House Republicans approved the first bill Monday that would eliminate $71 billion in additional funding for the Internal Revenue Service. The Congressional Budget Office has warned that this could cost the federal government more than it saves in the long run, if the bill becomes law.
“Republicans continue the myth that they protect the middle class, as they did in Trump’s 2017 tax bill. It didn’t work and it doesn’t work now,” Schumer wrote, referring to the tax cuts implemented by former President Donald Trump during his tenure.
Schumer vowed not to allow House Republicans to reduce annual appropriations to the 2022 level, saying such cuts, including to law enforcement and public safety, would “undermine America’s security.”
He also cited the House GOP’s intention to cut funding for programs like Social Security and Medicare and ban abortions nationwide, even though the candidates’ anti-abortion stances seem responsible for Republicans’ poor showing in the November midterm elections.
“These extreme views are deeply dangerous to America, and Senate Democrats will ensure that women’s health is strengthened, not undermined,” Schumer said.
