Christian Atsu’s body arrives in Ghana as tears flow
The mortal remains of Christian Atsu, the Ghana International footballer who died in the earthquake in Turkey, have landed in Ghana today, February 19, 2023.
The casket in national colors was carried by the military in a brief ceremony held at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra.
Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia who led the delegation to receive the body on behalf of the government described the day as sad because the tragedy that happened was a devastating tragedy as the whole nation prayed for Christian Atsu to be found alive but unfortunately he was no more when he was found.
He expressed the government’s sincere condolences to the football fraternity and the bereaved family for their loss.
“Atsu played for the Black Stars and we will miss him a lot,” said Dr Bawumia.
He prayed for Christian Atsu’s soul to rest in peace, assuring the family and the country’s football community to join hands to lay Christian Atsu to rest.
Nene Twasam, the Head of the Family thanked the government and the country for their kind support because of the sad news of his disappearance before he was found dead.
He assured Ghanaians to be aware of the funeral of the footballer who was loved by many because of the nature of the person who came to this world.
A special prayer was given by the clergy before the coffin was matched to the waiting hearse and taken away.
Many people on the field including the football fraternity felt the pain of the family with some people seen crying and crying.
It was a very difficult time for many people gathered at the airport.
Atsu’s lifeless body was pulled from the rubble in Turkey after an 11-story building collapsed on him and others during earthquakes in Turkey and Syria two weeks ago.
The remains were accompanied by his family and the Ghanaian Ambassador to Türkiye on a Turkish Airlines flight which arrived in Accra at 19:40 on Sunday, February 19, 2023.
