Chrisland school denies alleged exhumation request, apologises

The Management of Chrisland School, Ikeja, Lagos, has denied the alleged plan to exhume the body of Whitney Adeniran, a 12-year-old student of the school who died on February 9 during an inter-house sports competition.

An autopsy conducted at the Lagos State University Hospital (LASUTH) has confirmed that the deceased died of “asphyxia and electrocution”.

But the school, which claimed that the student “slumped in public view and was not in a hidden state,” did not accept the autopsy report.

Commenting on the alleged plan to bury the student’s body, the school said: “We have no such plan and assure the public that we are also concerned parents and will not do or subscribe to anything that paints an insensitive optic that prevents our daughter who dear. from rest.

“We assure you everything will not happen. Instead of doing this, plans are still being made to block Whitney’s name so that she can remain indelible in our consciousness. This is without prejudice to the ongoing Corona investigation, but it is the respect that we owe .

“While not pre-empting the investigation, the School would like to state that the management understands and appreciates the outpouring of emotions from this unfortunate incident”.

However, the school said it had been careful to remain calm and not respond to every issue on social media, but “unfortunately this silence came with regrettable and wrong conclusions”.

“However, Chrisland School will continue to co-operate with the authorities during the investigation, as well as offer support to parents at this sad time,” he said.

The school apologizes

School management said they were aware of the developments in the autopsy report, saying they were “sorry and sorry for Whitney’s parents”.

The statement further read: “We apologize to the parents and the entire community that hosts the school. We also apologize to the nation in general. It is a great loss for the School.

“We expressed the same measure to apologize to the Nigerian Media, other critical stakeholders, that we have sent a very quiet signal. We have been quiet because this is a very shocking death, we prefer to introspect and moral honesty rather than going around the Media space to seize narrative.

“Moreso, we consider it important to allow the parents and the entire Adeniran family to respect their privacy as we all mourn this unfortunate loss. Whitney Adeniran is an intelligent and excellent student. He is popular and friendly. His memories live on with us.

The background

After the unfortunate death of the student, the deceased’s parents accused the school management of negligence.

He took to social media to call for public intervention to unravel the circumstances that could have led to his daughter’s sudden death while participating in a sporting event.

His parents contended that the lack of an ambulance or first responders at the venue of the sporting event contributed to the student’s death.

In reaction, the Chairman of the school’s Advisory Board, Ike Ofuokwu, noted in a statement that the deceased 12-year-old “slumped in public view and was not in a hidden state.”

“Our immediate response is to take advantage of the distance by identifying the nearest medical facility to take him, where the doctor on duty will give him oxygen and all the help he can,” Mr Ofuokwu said.

According to the statement, the student chose not to participate in past intramural sports matches “because we were not sure.”
