Chris Hughton is set to travel to Ghana next week to unveil

Two weeks after the Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced Chris Hughton as the new Black Stars head coach, the 64-year-old is expected to travel to Ghana next week for the unveiling.

The former Newcastle coach has been part of the Ghana national team since March 2022 as a Technical Advisor.

Hughton replaces Otto Addo who stepped down after Ghana finished bottom of Group G at the 2022 World Cup.

The introduction as the new head coach of the four-time Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champions has been delayed due to the death of Willie Hughton’s father.

Speaking exclusively to 3 Sports, GFA Director of Communications, Henry Asante Twum announced Hughton lost his Ghanaian father in England.

“Chris had to stay in England because he lost his father and needed time with his family and planning the funeral service. That’s why he hasn’t been to Ghana yet.”

The new head coach is expected to arrive in Ghana next week ahead of Ghana’s AFCON qualifier against Angola.

“We are expecting Chris in Ghana next week if everything goes according to plan. We are constantly involved in the opening, media engagement, and making the game,” added Henry.

According to Henry, the opening ceremony of the Ghanaian coach, and the announcement of the squad for the Angolan doubles will also take place.

“He is working, Chris and his assistant will open together. When he arrives, we will tell him the date and place to be announced and then use it as part of the build-up to the game against Angola. There will also be squad announcements, contract details, and targets set for the new technical team .

Ghana will play Angola in Kumasi on March 23 before traveling to Luanda for the reverse fixture four days later. The Black Stars top Group E alongside Angola with both teams on four points after two games.
