Education Minister Chris Hipkins will become New Zealand’s next prime minister after he was the only candidate in Saturday’s race to replace Jacinda Ardern.

Hipkins, 44, still needs to seek an endorsement Sunday from his Labor colleagues in Parliament but it is now just a formality.

Ardern stunned a nation of five million people on Thursday when she announced her resignation after five and a half years in the top role.

He also announced that New Zealand’s next general election will be held on October 14, and that he will remain a member of parliament until then.
