An embittered Chris Cuomo railed against the “radical left” and declared the Democratic party “dead” following his brother Andrew Cuomo’s loss in the New York City mayoral primary.
The younger Cuomo fumed about “extremism” during a Wednesday night monologue on his NewsNation show, claiming that Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani’s stunning election win was a sign that Democrats are in “MAGA mode.”
It was not Mamdani’s promise to combat the cost of living crisis that won over voters, but bigotry on the left, according to the news anchor.
“In the same way MAGA played with the prejudices of white nationalism, you’re seeing an identical dynamic on the Left with prejudices, like tacitly supporting extreme Islamism or targeting Jews,” he explained. “For the Right, it’s migrants. And for the Left, it’s Jews. It’s fundamentalist Christians dominating the Right, and fundamentalist Islamists making headway on the Left. I know that doesn’t sound like Democrats, but the party is dead. What it will be reborn as we will see.”
Mamdani, who would be the first Muslim to be elected mayor of New York and has faced an onslaught of Islamophobia attacks since his win, has been forced to defend himself against accusations of antisemitism over his criticism of Israel and for refusing to denounce the pro-Palestinian slogan “globalize the intifada.”
Cuomo went on to attack Mamdani’s economic platform, comparing his proposal for rent freezes, city-owned grocery stores and subsidized child care to the “kill the rich” rallying cries of the French Revolution.
“The outcome of this election was not about affordability or about real change,” he said. “The winner is an open socialist, and the Democratic Party is now just that: socialistic.”
Claiming the left and right are now both populist movements only “grounded in grievance,” Cuomo accused “MAGA and its Dem opposite” of taking “advantage of real angst and pain” without delivering on change.
“If only getting things done sold as well as burning things down,” he said.
