Chiefs believe they can win the league, says Mokwena

Given the history of Kaizer Chiefs, who only turned 53 this month, Rulani Mokwena knows exactly why Amakhosi are still hoping for a miracle this season, in the form of a late season rise to the DStv Premiership title.

Mamelodi Sundowns and the Glamor Boys meet at the FNB Stadium on Saturday night, and head coach Masandawana Mokwena says Chiefs’ title ambitions will be the fuel to beat the defending champions.

The odds are heavily stacked against the Chiefs as they face a Downs side in form who have won 11 games in the Premiership.

Meanwhile, Arthur Zwane’s men are walking away with their tails between their legs after suffering a 4-0 defeat at the mercy of late AmaZulu.

They also trail leaders Sundowns with 19 points.

“We will see both teams going for results because Chiefs believe they can win the league,” said Mokwena.

Despite Zwane’s 4-0 loss to Usuthu, Chiefs management kept the former winger in the fold, and this pleased Mokwena as he had good will for Zwane. However, they will provide ‘good luck’ to their partner.

“He will always say the same, if he likes to see me do well. But if he has to make a choice between me and him, he will like to see him win. Fortunately the coach does not play football. He is not the most important person because of the game belongs to the players.

“With all the admiration, patience and confidence that the club has shown in him, of course you will be happy to see the South African coach doing well, but not at the expense of Sundowns. When you watch the team, you will see the identity of the well-coached team and you will see the work which has been completed,” added Pembimbing Masandawana.

“The most important thing for me is to acknowledge that he did a good job. At the end of the day we are in the results business. It’s not about us, but we are responsible for the results and it’s good to see that Chiefs are giving a lot of support to Zwane.
