Chelsea reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League
Graham Potter enjoyed his best night as Chelsea manager as he overcame a first-leg deficit against Borussia Dortmund to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Potter is under huge pressure following a poor run of results after Chelsea spent heavily in the transfer market, but he will be hoping this form of performance and progress to the final stages of Europe’s elite competition will provide a measure of calm and stability to Stamford. Bridge.
Chelsea deserved to win, although they squandered several great chances before Raheem Sterling made the breakthrough after 43 minutes, firing past Dortmund goalkeeper Alexander Meyer after opening a shot.
The goal that settled the match and overturned Dortmund’s 1-0 advantage from the first leg came in controversial fashion from the penalty spot eight minutes after the break.
Dortmund were angered when a VAR review penalized Marius Wolf for handball from Ben Chilwell’s cross and the sense of injustice was compounded after Kai Havertz hit the post with a spot-kick only for it to be retaken.
This time Havertz made no mistake and Chelsea were through to the last eight.
