Chelsea manager Graham Potter faces an “unmanageable situation” with his growing squad, former Blues goalkeeper Rob Green has said.
The club have spent £583 million on new players in the past two transfer windows under owner Todd Boehly, with eight new players arriving in January.
They have won just two of their past 14 games, but Potter has backed Boehly and the club’s board.
“With the number of players there, it’s an unmanageable situation,” Green said.
Potter moved to Chelsea from Brighton in September on a five-year contract following the sacking of Thomas Tuchel.
The Blues have won nine of their 25 games under Potter and sit 10th in the Premier League, 10 points off the Champions League places.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club, Green said: “When the crowd gets ugly, it gets ugly and the players get affected and go into their shells.
“You can see it from the player’s point of view, from an attacking perspective and then it becomes difficult.”
Chelsea haven’t scored twice in a game since the start of November and despite all the new arrivals in January, they haven’t been able to sign a recognized striker.
Former Blues striker Chris Sutton said Potter “has a lot to live up to”.
“With a lot of players coming in, they’re not sure at first, so they’ve been cut and changed and you can’t be consistent when you do that,” Sutton said on Monday Night Club.
“Goalscoring is a problem. But I like that Todd Boehly, in the face of it, supports him long-term.”
The Blues will be in action on Sunday at fourth-placed Tottenham (13:30 GMT).
