CHAN 2022: Ghana bounce back from Sudan as Afriyie Barnieh is sent off
The Black Galaxies responded well to their shock loss to Madagascar in their first match by beating Sudan on Thursday, and now have a good chance of qualifying for the knockout stages of the African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Annor Walker’s men were beaten 2-1 by Madagascar, and it looked like Sudan would add to their misery when the north African took the lead in the 31st minute thanks to a fine team goal.
However, Konadu Yiadom’s deflected effort brought Ghana level seconds before the break. The two-time finalists went from strength to strength in the second half, and captain Daniel Afriyie Barnieh expertly converted a penalty kick.
Barnieh had a second goal disallowed by VAR, while Sudan wasted several good chances to equalise. Sudan thought they had equalized in the 90th minute, but were penalized for a foul.
There was more drama, however, in extra time, as Barnieh was sent off in the 97th minute for a reckless challenge. A minute later, substitute Seidu Suraj scored from close range to give Ghana the win.
After the victory, Ghana have moved up to second in Group C and will be hoping that Sudan will not advance in their final match against Madagascar.
A draw in the game ensured Ghana’s place in the last eight. A win for Sudan could also help Ghana as they have a better head-to-head record after their win on Thursday.
