CBN debunks viral news suspending OPAY, PALMPAY

At Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been described as fake, news making the rounds that suspended the accounts of Fintech companies like OPAY and PALMPAY.

CBN’s Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Isa AbdulMumin, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that the virus news was “just fake”.

A viral news credited to Mr. AbdulMumin stated that the CBN intends to suspend the accounts of Fintech companies for being used to commit fraud.

“Please if you are using OPAY, PALMPAY or this CHINA app or POS, stop saving a lot of money in that account or stop using it.

“CBN is about suspending accounts because this app is being used to commit fraud,” the viral news read in part.

OPAY and PALMPAY in separate social media messages denied being on the CBN’s radar.

OPAY said that: “the post that says CBN is closing our operations is false and misleading to the general public.”

PALMPAY also posted the same disclaimer, saying: “we are aware of the news currently circulating on social media about the CBN shutting down PALMPAY operations.

“Please ignore all misleading news like this,” he said.

OPAY and PALMPAY are licensed under the CBN mobile payment regulatory framework.

They should provide mobile money services including mobile payment services to the banked and unbanked and to drive financial inclusion.
