Carlos Yulo was laser-focused on his parallel bars routine from the moment coach Munehiro Kugimiya removed the launch pad until the final aerial lap for a flawless landing.
The routine was only good enough for a bronze medal at the close of the 2023 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup in Cottbus, Germany, but it was enough to build momentum for another possibility should Yulo earn those precious ranking points.
The top Filipino gymnast will now go to Doha, Qatar, for the second phase of the world cup on March 1 to 4, followed by another staging in Baku, Azerbaijan, on March 9 to 12 before the series ends in Cairo, Egypt, on April 27. for 30.
Yulo is also looking to do better to qualify in her favorite events – floor exercise, vault and parallel bars – during the 2023 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Antwerp, Belgium, from September 30 to October 10.
“Win a medal [in the world cup series] it’s always the goal, but it’s also important to get the routine right in all three events,” Yulo said.
The 4-foot-11 fireball failed to cut the floor exercise in Cottbus after finishing 20th in the elimination event where Yulo is a former world champion.
He also missed out on a medal on the vault, an apparatus that usually ranks in the top three, including gold at the 2021 world championships.
Yulo has to overcome several obstacles, both physical and mental, before the kickoff of the world cup series in Germany.
The 22-year-old man from Leveriza, Manila, came down with the flu a month before the tournament, which kept him out of the gym for four days. Before that, he had a toothache that prevented him from eating and exercising properly.
“Time away from the gym is a big problem, especially if there is a big tournament coming up. Every day I always have the desire to visit the gym to keep in good shape,” said Yulo.
The No.1 player in each of the six devices after the four-legged world cup series automatically goes to the Antwerp world championships where a qualification spot for the Paris 2024 Olympics is at stake.
Another route for Yulo to get a ticket to Antwerp is through the Asian championships from June 10 to 18 in Singapore.
“It’s always been a personal mental battle in training and during competition. Sometimes you can’t escape negative thinking, you just have to fight it,” said Yulo.
