MANILA, Philippines—Carlos Edriel Yulo won another gold medal by winning the men’s vault final at the end of the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup Series in Baku, Azerbaijan on Sunday.
After the victory on the parallel bars, Yulo averaged 14.933 after two attempts-the first handspring double pike front good for 15.033 and the second netting vault 14.833-that propelled the Filipino to the top prize.
Great Britain’s Harry Hepworth finished second and Hong Kong’s Wai Hung Shek took bronze in the event while main final qualifier Mahdi Olfati of Iran bombed and finished fourth with 14.399.
Yulo extended his gold haul to three in the four-legged world cup after claiming the floor exercise title in Doha, Qatar last week where the 4-foot-11 fireball also earned a silver on the parallel bars and a bronze on the vault. .
The Tokyo Olympics opened its campaign in Cottbus, Germany with a bronze on the parallel bars.
Yulo’s next and final stop is the fourth leg of the World Cup in Cairo on April 27-30.
This year’s World Cup Series is a qualifier for the apparatus events at the 2023 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Antwerp, Belgium on Sept. 30-Oct. 8, which offers a place for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
