Carlos Queiroz begins Ghana stint with draw against Wales in pre-World Cup friendly
Carlos Queiroz’s tenure as head coach of Ghana’s Black Stars got underway with a draw against Wales on Tuesday night in an international friendly played as part of the team’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The experienced Portuguese tactician, who was appointed by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) in April to replace Otto Addo, took charge of the national team for the first time at Cardiff City Stadium.
The hosts made an energetic start and threatened to break the deadlock early in the contest. Wales created two promising opportunities within the opening 15 minutes, but goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi was equal to the challenge on both occasions.
The Ghana shot-stopper produced a pair of excellent saves to keep the Black Stars level as Wales looked to capitalise on their strong opening spell.
After weathering the early pressure, Ghana gradually settled into the game and began to assert themselves. The Black Stars improved as the first half progressed and managed to keep Wales from finding a breakthrough before the interval.
With neither side able to convert their chances, the teams went into the break deadlocked.
Queiroz made several changes after halftime, and the adjustments paid dividends midway through the second half.
Substitute Caleb Yirenkyi, who had only recently entered the match, found the net in the 66th minute to put Ghana ahead. The midfielder finished from close range after impressive work down the flank by Ernest Nuamah, handing the Black Stars a deserved lead.
The goal shifted momentum firmly in Ghana’s favour, with the visitors appearing well placed to secure victory.
Just as Ghana looked set to hand their new coach a winning debut, Wales struck late in stoppage time. Lewis Koumas scored with a header to rescue a draw for the hosts and ensure the spoils were shared.
