Carleton University Institute of African Studies (IAS) Wednesday will hold a virtual round table to discuss Nigeria’s general election.
Organizers noted that Saturday’s election represents critical implications for the African political landscape (both regionally and continentally).
“In a continent where democratic reversals are on the rise through a new wave of military coups …, the successful conduct of the most contested elections in Africa’s largest democracy can give legitimacy to Nigeria to continue to lead the process of promoting appropriate democratic norms. The African Union Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance as well as the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance,” the organizers said.
This roundtable is organized in collaboration with The Norman Paterson School of International Affairs (NPSIA) and the Department of Sociology and Anthropology of a Canadian university. It will bring together scholars, members of civil society, the media, and other stakeholders in Nigeria’s democratic project at home and in the diaspora.
Nigeria Election 2023 themed: Ray of hope or dead end, the roundtable will feature Okey Ndibe, author and political commentator; Aisha Yesufu, activist and entrepreneur, and Wumi Asubiaro-Dada, human rights activist.
Others are Abdul Mahmud, a lawyer and human rights activist; Chima Christian, journalist and public affairs analyst, and Kola Ologbondiyan, former spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Nigeria will hold federal presidential and legislative elections on February 25 while state elections will be held on March 11.
This year’s election, the seventh since 1999, will be one of the most contested as more than two candidates are expected to win.

There are 18 candidates vying for the presidency of Nigeria but only four are considered candidates. They are Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party; Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress; Peter Obi of the Labor Party and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigerian People’s Party.
