MPs holding special debate to address Middle East hostilities
Hi folks, I’m a senior writer with the parliamentary bureau in Ottawa.
A special “take note debate” on the war in the Middle East is underway after MPs agreed to extend the House’s sitting hours tonight.
A take note debate happens when the parties agree to allow MPs to weigh in on something that isn’t immediately before the House — essentially something that isn’t legislation or a motion.
In this case, MPs feel the need to get their views on the current hostilities in the Middle East on the record in the House of Commons.
This is the first day the House is sitting since the U.S. and Israel launched strikes on Iran, which is why such a debate hasn’t taken place until now.
The debate comes after Carney faced some criticism from opposition MPs over his response to the ongoing hostilities. The prime minister initially said he supported the strikes and then later said that his support wasn’t a “blank cheque.” Carney has also suggested that Canada could get involved in the conflict in some sort of defensive capacity if Gulf allies asked for help.
The Prime Minister’s Office told my colleagues earlier that Carney isn’t expected to participate.
