No fewer than 15 groups of supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River have called for the neutrality of the state Police Command during the general election.

The group made the call on Saturday at a press conference where they also demanded the redeployment of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations in the state.
The spokesperson of the group, Dr Claimnz Enamhe, stated that the reality on the ground shows that the DCP Operation does not respect the Oath of Office that was promised.
The group recalled the role played by the DCP during the Ogoja/Yala general election and said that with him, there was no way the security agency was neutral.

“We call on President Buhari, who is the number one security officer in the country, to look into the case of Cross River State and ask the Inspector General of Police, without delay, to redeploy DCP Francis Idu,
“We have serious information that some people are sponsoring some security personnel to harass and intimidate the voters by any means.
Enamhe, who is the National President of the Cross River Citizens Advancement (NAACP), noted that the 2023 general election is for the people to decide who they will trust with the state government.

He appealed to the men and officers of the police command and other security agencies not to allow themselves to be used to harass and disenfranchise, especially the supporters of the opposition parties.
However, the spokesperson of the state Police Command, SP Irene Ugbo, said the Command remains firm and most professional in carrying out its constitutional duty to protect lives and property.
He called on all parties involved to remain calm and abide by the law as there was no cause for alarm.
“We are not police for political parties, we are police for all citizens, our job is to protect lives and property, and we will not commit crimes to please anyone,” he said.
