Adam Armstrong pounced on a mistake from Crystal Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita to complete Southampton’s comeback with a 2-1 FA Cup third-round win at Selhurst Park.
Crystal Palace dominated the opening stages and deservedly took the lead in the 14th minute through Odsonne Edouard, but Southampton endured more pressure from the home side before James Ward-Prowse’s cross from a free-kick was deflected into the corner by Guaita.
The Royals’ keeper must have been disappointed to have failed to stop Southampton, but worse was to come in the 68th minute as he hesitated to allow Armstrong to block a gap and tap the ball into an empty net.
The win provided a much-needed boost for Southampton boss Nathan Jones, who is under pressure after losing all four Premier League games since taking charge in November, but has now won games in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.
