The Minister of Police, Mohammed Dingyadi, said that the appointment of Usman Baba as Inspector General of Police (IG) is only for a period of four years.
A statement by the Press Secretary to the minister, Ošaigbovo Ehisienmen, on Thursday in Abuja said the clarification followed reports in some sections of the media about the tenure extension for the IGP.
Mr. Dingyadi said that the IGP was appointed by the President Muhammadu Buhari on April 6, 2021 and confirmed by the Nigerian Police Council chaired by the president in June 2021 for a period of four years.
“The appointment and confirmation is done as provided, in Section 7 (3), and Section 7 (6) of the Police Act 2020 which among other things states “that the person appointed to the office of IG shall hold office for a period of four years. .
“The provisions of the amended Police Act 2020 should not be misused for extension of tenure as has been wrongly reported in some sections of the media,” he said.
The minister expressed concern over the misrepresentation of the IGP post by some sections of the media during a meeting with State Council Correspondents on Wednesday.
Mr. Baba will retire on March 1 when he is 60 years old.
