Buhari commissions Lekki deep seaport, rice mill in Lagos

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday commissioned the rice mill and the Lekki Deep Sea Port during his visit to Lagos.

During the two-day working visit, the president is scheduled to commission the Lekki Deep Port, Lagos Rice Mill and Imota, the 18.75 kilometer six-lane Eleko-Epe rigid pavement.

The rest is the first phase of 13 kilometers from Lagos Blue Light RailJohn Randle Center for Yoruba Culture and History.

On his arrival from Bauchi where he attended the presidential campaign rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Buhari was received by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat.

Also present were Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji and his Ogun counterpart, Dapo Abiodun.

Mr. Buhari made his first stop at the sea port before proceeding to the Lagos Rice Factory in Imota, Ikorodu where he unloaded the mill at 32 metric tons per hour.

The governor’s spokesperson, Gboyega Akosile, said “The rice mill will generate more than 300,000 direct and indirect jobs when it is operational.”

Described as a “landmark project” in the country, the seaport is located in the Lagos Free Trade Zone, Ibeju Lekki.

According to the Minister of Transportation, Mua’zu Sambo, the Lekki Deep Sea Port is “the largest seaport in Nigeria with a draft of 16.5m, the construction of which was initiated and completed by the administration of President Muhammad Buhari.”

The port “will provide great support to the growing commercial operations in Nigeria and the whole of West Africa.”

Speaking at the event, Mr. Sanwo-Olu said the project was “…a total effort by the federal government, the Lagos state government and the private sector.”

On Sunday, the first commercial ship entered the port. The Nigerian Ports Authority through its Twitter handlemade this known.
