Pirates were eager to win twice in a row after defeating the Golden Arrows, and they did just that with a great performance against Stellies, and they could do even better in terms of finishing their chances.

The win moved the Bucs into fourth place in the league standings, with the Soweto giants now amassing 25 points from 17 games.

The Buccaneers had a perfect start to the match, with the hosts getting a goal in the first eight minutes of the match through a fine header by Thabang Monare from a set-piece.

In the 15th minute, Stellies had a good chance to settle matters through Deano van Rooyen’s pace on the right-hand side of the attack, but his cross was cleared by the Bucs defence.

Pirates would go on to get their second goal of the match to make Stellenbosch even more difficult, with Innocent Maela scoring after a blunder by visiting goalkeeper Sage Stephens in the 22nd minute.

Stellenbosch found wanting most of the time, and Bucs could easily go into the break with a third goal, especially with Bandile Shandu’s attempt, but was denied by the crossbar.

The second half was not much different, with Bucs striker Kermit Erasmus finally making it 3-0 with a fine strike in the 60th minute, before Ndabayitethwa Ndlondlo scored the hosts’ fourth goal a few minutes later with a fine shot from outside the box.

Stellenbosch managed to get a consolation goal through Mervin Boji in the 74th minute.

The defeat against Pirates marked the ninth game since the Stellies last won a match, and they have now fallen to 15th in the league standings.

Stellenbosch registered only 17 points from 18 league games.
