BREAKING NEWS: David Mabuza resigns as South Africa’s Deputy President

After weeks of questions about his whereabouts, David Mabuza has confirmed that he has resigned as the country’s Vice President.

Speaking at his brother’s funeral in Mpumalanga on Saturday, Mabuza confirmed his resignation and said the President would announce the announcement.

In a video shared by journalist Samkele Maseko, Mabuza is at the podium talking about respecting Ramaphosa and expressing hope that those left behind (working in organizations and government) will respect him.

The announcement came after Mabuza failed to return as Ramaphosa’s representative in the ANC following the results of the party’s national conference in December.

He was more suspicious when he missed the National Executive Committee (NEC) lekgotla, and the lekgotla Cabinet cited his family’s grief as the reason for his absence in the official apology for missing the event.

“The President will announce that Mabuza has left. I promise to respect the President until I leave. I hope those who enter will also respect the President,” he said in the short clip.

This is a developing story.
