Brace yourselves for another wet week

The wet weather conditions that have covered various parts of the country in the past few days are expected to continue into the new week.

The continuous heavy rains experienced over the past few days are the result of a low pressure system that made landfall last week.

The weather system in question, became quasi-stationary between Thursday and Saturday and heavy rains were experienced on consecutive days.

Flood

The heavy rain also caused flooding in various parts of Gauteng including in the informal settlement of Patsing, south of the province.

Talk to The Warga South African Weather Service (SAWS) forecaster Ismael Moyo said a yellow level 2 warning for disruptive rainfall has been issued for parts of KwaZulu Natal (KZN) and Mpumalanga on Monday and an orange level 9 warning for Limpopo.

More heavy rain

The expected rainfall this coming week will be the result of a tropical system associated with heavy rains, according to Moyo.

“Residents in Gauteng, KZN, Lowveld Mpumalanga can expect an 80% chance of rain on Tuesday and 60% for those on the south coast.

“At this stage, no warnings have been issued for Gauteng and KZN except for Limpopo on Tuesday, but we will continue to monitor the situation in the eastern part of the country where more rain is forecast,” Moyo said.

Rain forecast for Wednesday

More heavy rain is forecast with an 80% chance on the cards for Gauteng, the extreme east of the Free State, the eastern part of the North West province as well as the Bushveld southwest of Limpopo.

“A 60% chance of rain is forecast for the rest of the eastern part of the country,” Moyo said.

Meanwhile daytime temperatures are expected to remain in the cool to warm category for the better part of this week with maximums in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Vereeniging set to range between 23 and 25 degrees Celsius.

At the end of last year, SAWS warned of a wet 2023 with above normal rainfall to last until the coming autumn season.
