With the introduction of Ordinals, Bitcoiners have now written more than 45,000 NFTs directly to the Bitcoin blockchain.
Bitcoin has close to 50,000 inscriptions on the Bitcoin blockchain. From Bitcoin Punks to fart audio recordings, the ability to write data directly to the Bitcoin blockchain has impacted society.
Inscription, through the Ordinal protocol, allows users to upload data, usually images, directly to the Bitcoin blockchain, effectively enabling NFTs in Bitcoin.
Mempool, a collection of Bitcoin blocks waiting to be mined and added to the blockchain, now it’s full at the time of writing as a result of the increase in the use of block space that has brought inscriptions.

debate has raged about the impact of the introduction of Ordinals in Bitcoin. Bitcoin Magazine’s Mark Goodwin released a brief exploration of the potential impact this project could have.
“Bitcoin is a database with a defined consensus, and there is nothing in Ordinal Theory or Inscription that violates these rules,” Goodwin wrote. “The bottom line is that the fact that it only works for bitcoin does not mean that it is good for the users of the system. But Bitcoin is a system of rules, not bias, and the arbiter of validity must remain in the code… The worst action to take is the one that hastily destroy the situation we are currently fighting for.Someone can buy every block forever.
Zack Voell, Bitcoin Magazine’s mining contributor, recently explored the potential impact of Ordinals for the future of the bitcoin mining industry in particular, saying “Ordinals are Bitcoin data inscriptions that give miners a glimpse into what the future of Bitcoin MEV can be… Ordinals provide a glimpse of the future in where other Bitcoin users introduce creative reasons to claim the same space, which forces these competing users to meet in the fee market for the limited space in the block.
All in all, the project could have major ramifications in Bitcoin mining and development. But of course the inscription is not slow – at least, not in the current fee environment. This may change as the fee market reflects the dynamics of increased block space demand, but for now, it seems one-way track to millions of inscriptions on the Bitcoin block.
