Doctors who treated Damar Hamlin said the Bills safety was transferred to the hospital in Buffalo on Friday, an uplifting sign of the remarkable progress he has made a week after going into cardiac arrest and having to be resuscitated on the field during a game in Cincinnati.
Hamlin was discharged from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center this morning and flown to Buffalo, where he will continue his recovery.
“I can confirm that he is doing well. And this is the beginning of the next phase of recovery,” said Dr. William Knight.
Doctors said Hamlin has been walking since Friday, and is eating a normal diet and undergoing therapy. He said he is on a normal or even accelerated trajectory when it comes to recovering from a heart attack, which is considered a life-threatening event, and that a normal recovery can be measured from weeks to months.
“We continue to be excited about the recovery,” said Dr. Timothy Pritts.
Hamlin’s response came a day after he cheered the Bills on from his hospital bed during the regular-season finale’s 35-23 win over the New England Patriots. The game proved to be a boon for the Bills and Hamlin.

Hamlin was so excited watching teammate Nyheim Hines return the opening kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown that “he was jumping up and down, out of his chair, setting every alarm off in the ICU in the process,” Pritts said with a laugh.
Pritts said it was premature to comment on the potential cause of Hamlin’s heart attack.
The Bills wore Hamlin’s No. 3 patch on their jerseys Sunday and honored their teammates by raising three fingers in the closing minutes, while tight end Dawson Knox celebrated a touchdown by making a heart shape with his hands. Fans joined in, with many holding up red hearts and No. 3 signs.

Less than a week after Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin suffered a heart attack during a game, fans and players showed their support for him and his recovery at NFL stadiums in the US.
“Watching the world come around me on Sunday was truly amazing,” Hamlin said in a tweet announcing his return home to Buffalo, “with love in my heart.
“The same love you all have shown me is the same love I plan to put back into the n other world.”
The 24-year-old from the Pittsburgh area has made significant progress in his recovery since spending the first two days at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center under sedation and breathing through a ventilator.
He was woken up on Wednesday night and was finally able to hold someone’s hand. On Friday, Hamlin was able to breathe on his own and instead addressed the team via video conference, where he told the Bills, “Love you guys.”
The latest update from doctors came Saturday, when they described Hamlin’s neurological function as “excellent,” although he remains in critical condition.
Later that day, Hamlin tweeted: “Putting love into the world returns 3xs as much, thank you to everyone who reached out and prayed. This will make me stronger on the road to recovery, keep praying for me!”

The NFL will show support for Hamlin throughout the week of 18 games by including a pregame moment of support, painting Hamlin’s No.
Hamlin’s heart stopped Monday night after making what appeared to be a routine play in the first quarter against the Bengals. The game was initially delayed before being officially canceled later in the week.
News of Hamlin’s release from the hospital in Cincinnati was greeted with enthusiasm.
“It’s unbelievable,” Bengals coach Zac Taylor said.
“I mean, just think about it – that one week, not even last week. No one in this room would have expected that he would be in Buffalo,” he added. “God is great. He does miracles. This is definitely a miracle, no question… And it’s just an amazing moment for Damar.”
