Former Attorney General William Barr said he would not advise Donald Trump to try to defend himself in court because the former president “lacks self-control.”
“I am not his lawyer. In general, I think it’s a bad idea to go on the stand, and I think it’s a particularly bad idea for Trump because he has no self-control, and it will be very difficult to prepare him and let him testify in a sensible way. ” replied Barr.
Trump was indicted last week for his role in a 2016 cash payment to Stormy Daniels, a porn star who claimed he had an affair with her a decade ago. Daniels was paid $130,000 in exchange for keeping quiet about the affair in the days leading up to the 2016 election.
Barr is a longtime Trump ally, but he became more critical of the former president after the 2020 election, after he said Trump was “a substitute for reality.”
However, in an interview Sunday, Barr still described the Manhattan DA’s case against Trump as politically motivated, in line with rhetoric from Trump and his supporters.
