Since survived premiered in the US in May 2000, the reality competition continues to be a great success for CBS. However, there was a lot of controversy in the show.
The commotion started from go-go, when Richard Hatch walking around the camp naked during the first season, Survivor: Borneo. However, he still won the top prize.
Various scandals continued over the years, but perhaps the biggest in 2017 during season 34, Survivor: Game Changerswhen Jeff Varner exit Zeke Smith as transgender during tribal council. Two years later, the controversy struck again when And Spilo became the first castaway in the history of the show to be ejected from the game after he acted inappropriately with his female costars.
“It has been an unprecedented season,” the host Jeff Probst later told Entertainment Weekly. “Complex social issues are woven into the game in a way that has never been seen before. With the well-being of the contestants at the forefront, we have spent a lot of time discussing every layer of the situation with human resources, diversity and inclusion representation, performance therapists, lawyers, publicists , and standards and practices. We all worked diligently throughout the process to make the right decisions and portray an accurate picture of what happened. We have learned a lot and will inform our process moving forward.
