Respecting the men and women in uniform, will help us all – Minister of Defense

Defense Minister Dominic Nitwul appealed to all Ghanaians to respect the men and women in uniform.

This, he said, would help everyone in the country.

“I will call on Ghanaians to respect the people in uniform, it will help us all. I will not say anything more until we, the members of the committee, on Thursday go to the place and decide for ourselves,” he told reporters in Parliament, Thursday, March 9, after being accused of killing a soldier in Ashaiman.

Meanwhile, Parliament’s Defense and Home Affairs Committee said it would not visit Ashaiman soon because of the brutality the military inflicted on civilians after killing one of them,

According to the Chairman of the Committee, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, the members do not want to go to town and make statements that will inflame emotions.

“We as members of the Committee cannot burn passion by going there to give comments that will disturb the faction. We did not do this,” he told reporters in Parliament on Thursday, March 9.

3news.comSources, however, say that the Committee prefers to visit Ashaiman on Friday, March 16 after investigations have been completed about the murder of soldiers and the subsequent storming of the area by the military.

A soldier who was stabbed to death on Saturday, March 4, prompted the military to launch an operation to fish out the perpetrators.

About 184 people were arrested but most civilians in the city reported violence by the army, whose action on Tuesday, March 7 was said to have been approved by the Military High Command.

The commando has since apologized for the act, but Mr Agyapong, who is also the Member of Parliament for Assin Central Constituency, said he only wanted peace.

“Our mission is to create peace in this country. The unfortunate incident that happened, we all have condemned and the Minister [of Defence] even apologized on behalf of the military that he admitted to excesses.

The slain soldier, Imoro Sherrif, based in Sunyani but in Accra for a course, has been buried at the Burma Camp Military Cemetery.
