Bauchi govt intervenes as Muslim, Christian communities disagree over ownership of graveyard

The Bauchi State Government has resolved a brewing crisis between the Christian and Muslim communities in Yola Bayara, a suburb of Bauchi metropolis, over the ownership of a cemetery.

The leader of the Yolan Bayara community, Sani Yakubu, has accused the state government of taking 50 hectares of agricultural land and giving it to the Christian community for use as a cemetery without compensation.

Mr. Yakubu said that for justice and fairness to the Muslim community living in the area, the state government should compensate the Muslim community in the area appropriately for the land.

However, Muktar Gidado, the spokesman for the state Governor, Bala Mohammed, told reporters on Monday that the government has decided to look into the complaints of the Muslim community and resolve the issue amicably.

During a press conference, which was attended by the State Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Adamu Gabarin, the government said the land was allocated to the Christian community by the previous administration.

Mr. Gidado added that since the issue is still causing problems among members of the public, the government will now investigate the matter with a view to resolving it amicably.

Mr. Gidado said the government has set up a committee under the leadership of the state Deputy Governor, Baba Tella, who has been in contact with both parties with a view to resolving the dispute.

He said every Bauchi indigene has the right to get land from the Ministry of Lands and Surveys indicating that since land belongs to the government, anyone whose land is taken from them should be compensated.

He said the government is looking into the complaints of both parties and will arrive at a decision that will satisfy all parties.

Mr Gidado said the state government would announce its findings and position on the issue.

He called on both parties to remain calm and peaceful.
