MANILA, Philippines – Bal David has resigned as head coach of the University of Santo Tomas men’s basketball team, according to several reports.
The Varsitarian, the school’s official student publication, reported Wednesday that David has tendered his resignation after just one season with the Growling Tigers.
The UST organ also wrote that assistant coach Rodney Santos will remain on the coaching staff.

In David’s first year, UST won its opening game against Adamson but lost 13 straight games, ending up at the bottom of the UAAP Season 85 men’s basketball tournament standings.
The former PBA star, nicknamed “The Flash”, took over as coach last July, two months before Season 85.
David, who was part of UST’s championship titles in the 1993 and 94 UAAP seasons under late Tigers coach Aric del Rosario, only lasted six months with the Tigers.
After the last game last year, the former Ginebra cager blamed the last position and told the players that there is no going back.
“We have a lot of struggles but I keep telling the boys not to stop. Struggle after struggle, so we have to be in the same direction. No one will stop, no one will give up,” said David in Filipino during the match.
He even added that UST will not have a major overhaul and that he still prefers the “old school” method of recruitment.
The Tigers will have a different coach for the third consecutive season, following David’s resignation.
UST had two different coaches in one year with Jinino Manansala in charge in Season 84 after the failure of the “Sorsogon Bubble” which led to the exodus of key players and the ban of Aldin Ayo was not always a coach in the league.
