From an Olympic-starved nation, Team Philippines pulled off a quantum leap by winning its first gold medal at the 2021 Tokyo Summer Olympics through celebrity weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz.
Sustaining the momentum gained from the biggest meeting in global sports will be the main agenda of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman Richard “Dickie” Bachmann.
The newly installed PSC chairman will hope to sit down with the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) to create a task force that will plan the route of Filipino athletes to the Paris 2024 Olympics.
“I am focused on the athletes and the NSA (national sports association). I will also strengthen my relationship with the POC,” said Bachmann, who was sworn in as chairman of the government’s 12 sports agencies last week.
“In fact, I received a congratulatory letter from POC president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino and I will respond by asking him to create a task force-both PSC and POC-so that we can work together for all the upcoming events at the Olympics. Bachmann added.
The needs of athletes
In addition to strengthening the agency’s relationship with POC, another focal point that Bachmann will emphasize is the needs of athletes and the various national sports associations.
There are over a thousand athletes managed by at least 70 recognized NSAs under the POC umbrella.
The PSC-POC task force for Paris 2024 will oversee the training, competition and overall preparation of athletes who have a strong chance of qualifying and who are said to win medals at the Olympics.
Diaz, who won the country’s first gold medal at the quadrennial meet two years ago in Tokyo, will be on the priority list as well as Tokyo Olympic silver medalists Nesthy Petecio and Carlo Paalam from boxing and fellow boxer Eumir Marcial, who bagged a bronze medal. .
Also expected to be on the list are world champion gymnast Carlos Edriel Yulo and No. 3 pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena. Both Yulo and Obiena are good medal contenders once they get to Paris.
“We haven’t dealt with it [task force] not yet. Now, I’m focusing on my own organization,” Bachmann said.
There is a lot of work ahead for Bachmann and his board consisting of PSC commissioners Olivia “Bong” Coo, Edward Hayco and Walter Torres with a jam-packed schedule of international multi-event competitions this year.
