Ayeh-Paye Asks for Mercy From Comments on Religious Bigotry
Former Ayensuano Member of Parliament, Ayeh-Paye Samuel has apologized to the Muslim community and the Vice President, Dr.
He was accused of playing the religious card in the campaign leading to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Internal Elections.
A former member of the House of Representatives, now the Eastern Regional Campaign Coordinator Alan Kyerematen was accused of talking to a certain woman named Wendy Akuffo, who seemed to convince, not thinking of electing the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. just because he is a Muslim and does not belong to the majority religious group in the country.
In the conversation, he said the Vice President will lose because the 2024 election will be based on religious grounds, especially since the New Patriotic Party has failed miserably to make Ghana’s economy better.
“We have lost the economic war. What we are left with is the religious and tribal game, if you don’t like it, then we are done,” Ayeh-Paye told one of the delegates that he was sure to vote against Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Setting the record straight, the former MP in a statement explained that “I never said in a private conversation with him that we should not elect Dr. Bawumia because he is a Muslim”.
According to him, “The conversation was based only on the assessment of the chances of the Muslim candidate against the Christian candidate”.
Here is the full statement:
My attention has been drawn to some trending reports in the traditional and social media that, I preach the religious line to the Vice President of the Republic, Dr. , and I have called some party members to vote for him.
To set the record straight, what happened was, on Wednesday, January 12, 2023, I had a private conversation with a lady named Wendy Akuffo, via WhatsApp.
In the discussion, I was judged to consider the Muslim presidential candidate against the Christian NDC presidential candidate.
I also suggested to him that due to the higher Christian population in Ghana, the NPP should field a Christian as its presidential candidate.
I stated that the NPP has a better chance of winning the 2024 election if we present Christians as our candidates.
I never said in any private conversation with him that we should not vote for Dr. Bawumia because he is a Muslim.
The conversation was based solely on an assessment of the chances of a Muslim candidate against a Christian candidate.
This lady, who I suspect has an agenda to trap me, took the twisted discussion, and wrote on her Facebook wall claiming, I said Dr. Bawumia Muslim so Christians should not vote for him.
So on the record, I have a lot of respect for Muslims and I also respect Christians and Muslims co-existing in this country and I will not do to endanger the relationship between the two religious groups.
There I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to the entire Muslim community and all those who have been hurt by this twisted story and also state clearly that I never said that Dr. Bawumia is a Muslim and should not be singled out. for.
… Signed…
Hon Samuel Ayeh Paye
Former Member of Parliament, Ayensuano
