Ato Forson announced a roadshow on the audit report of the COVID-19, the economic crisis

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by the leader of the minority caucus in Parliament, has said that on February 7, 2023, it will start a public hearing followed by a roadshow to sensitize Ghanaians about government spending on COVID-19 and the current economic crisis.

According to the party, it will participate in the finance and health committees in public hearings to explain the implications of the COVID-19 expenditure.

The move comes on the back of several violations cited in the Auditor General’s report on the government’s COVID-19 spending.

This was announced by the newly appointed minority leader in Parliament, Dr. Ato Forson, when speaking to the press on January 26, 2023.

“We want to assure Ghanaians that as part of our engagement with the finance and health committees, we have agreed to hold a public hearing on the audit of the COVID-19 expenditure from February 7, 2023.”

“At that time, we will pay carefully for the task given to us as Ghanaians. Finally, we will also start a roadshow, where we will galvanize Ghanaians, and educate them about the meaning of this economic crisis will take place,” said Ato Forson .

The Auditor General’s report stated that over GH¢21 billion was mobilized for the fight against COVID-19 but only GH¢5.5 billion was spent on health.

But the balance is used for budget line items such as government programs in Free SHS and LEAP, etc.

In addition, some funds are used for unapproved expenditures or purchases that have not yet been delivered.

The report by the Auditor General thus recommended that the amount be returned to the state.
