He used to be very close. So it’s amazing, and a little sad, to see how far Charles’ sons – Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and Prince William, Prince of Wales – have come in the last few years. William had an official role in the coronation there, as heir to the throne; Harry has nothing, except as a relative descended in the third line of Westminster Abbey.
It is unclear whether the two men acknowledged each other when William processed them, long after Harry sat down.
Dressed in his morning suit with several medals on his chest, Harry smiled kindly as he entered the monastery. He did not sit with his family, but between Jack Brooksbank, Eugenie’s cousin’s husband, and Princess Alexandra, 86, the cousin of Queen Elizabeth II who is reportedly 56th in line to the throne.
William wore full military regalia and at one point dropped to his knees and pledged allegiance to Charles, a moment that was both shockingly anachronistic and strangely touching. After saying the vow, he kissed his father’s cheek, and Charles stepped forward and softly murmured in response.
Harry’s wife, Meghan, who has been – unfairly or not, depending on how you look at it – blamed for the separation from her father and brother, remains at home in California with her two children; William’s three children were in the monastery with their parents.
Speculation about Harry’s presence, or absence, dominated much of the tabloid gossip during the coronation, and continued as the ceremony continued.
After the coronation, William, Catherine and their children entered an ornate carriage that took them on a long and majestic journey to Buckingham Palace. There, they joined the newly crowned king and queen and other family members for a traditional wave moment on the palace balcony, heads raised to watch a military fly-over (cut short due to rain).
Neither Harry nor his uncle Prince Andrew, who has been ostracized from the family because of his relationship with financier Jeffrey Epstein, was in the attic.
Harry also doesn’t seem to bond with William, at least not publicly. He reportedly headed to the airport to fly back to California after the coronation, thus missing the post-coronation luncheon and family portrait. (According to The Daily Telegraph, she wanted to return home to say goodnight to her son, Archie, who celebrated his fourth birthday on Saturday.)
“Sources on both sides indicate that the relationship between Prince Harry and Prince William, in particular, is at rock bottom, the newspaper reported. “The two brothers have not spoken to each other for months.”
