At least 39 migrants have died in a fire at an immigration detention center in northern Mexico near the US border, federal officials said.

Another 29 people were injured in a fire overnight at a facility in Ciudad Juarez

At least 39 migrants have died in a fire at an immigration detention center in northern Mexico near the US border, federal officials said.

Images from the scene show rows of bodies lying under silver sheets outside the facility in Ciudad Juarez, on the outskirts of El Paso, Texas.

Ambulances, firefighters and vans from the morgue can also be seen.

Thirty-nine people were killed and 29 injured in the fire, which broke out on Monday, according to the National Immigration Institute. The fire was detected around 10pm local time.

Ciudad Juarez is a major crossing point for migrants entering the United States. The shelters are full of migrants waiting for a chance to cross or those who have applied for asylum in the United States and are awaiting the process.

Mexico’s attorney general’s office has launched an investigation and has investigators on the scene, according to media reports.
