Ashaiman Military Brutalities: Let’s respect people in uniform – Defence Minister

“I will call on Ghanaians to respect the men in uniform, it will help us all. I will not say anything until we, the committee members, go to the venue on Thursday and decide something for ourselves.

The Defense and Home Affairs Committee of the Parliament has also announced that a committee together with the Ministry of Defense and the Military High Command will visit the Ashaiman community on Thursday, March 16.

Speaking to journalists, the Chairman of the Committee on Defense and Home Affairs, Kennedy Agyepong said the visit would inform the committee on its next course of action.

Meanwhile, a pressure group – Ashaiman Lives Matter – called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to immediately set up a committee to investigate the brutality inflicted on Ashaiman residents by some soldiers.

The group is made up of former MP, Alfred Agbesi and current MP Ernest Norgbey in a statement condemning the invasion of Ashaiman by some brutal soldiers and arresting more than 150 people.

The invasion followed the death of a young soldier who was stabbed to death by some unknown assailants in the community.

“Now we are always fearing for our dear lives because the soldiers are telling the residents that this is Operation Sasi and they have instructions from above to fear God to avenge the killing of the dead soldiers.

The Minister’s comments came in the wake of the invasion of Ashaiman by some soldiers after the killing of a young military officer. The soldier harasses some villagers in the hope of finding his friend’s killer.
