ANC MP arrested for wife’s murder

An African National Congress (ANC) lawmaker has been arrested for allegedly murdering his 31-year-old wife.

The 34-year-old, who cannot be named until he appears in court, was arrested in Klerksdorp on Saturday morning.

Arrested

The man was charged with murder, almost two months after the incident.

national police spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, confirmed the arrest for The Warga.

“The incident occurred on November 27, 2022, at the suspect’s home in Kanana.”

“The suspect faces a charge of murder and will appear at Orkney Magistrates’ Court on Monday, January 23, 2023,” Mathe said.

Evidence of murder

Meanwhile, South Africa has taken to social media over the arrest of an ANC MP.

Former Sunday Times reporter Mzilikazi wa Afrika said the man’s wife may have hinted that he was about to be killed.

“Just connecting the dots: he may have disappeared but he left behind some evidence.”

The ANC has yet to issue a statement on the MP’s arrest.

EFF reaction

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) says the ANC MP’s wife’s name has been added to the Intimate Partner (IP) femicide list which is pointless.

“It also reinforces the patriarchal culture where men turn the homes and bodies of their female partners into crime scenes. One in three (1 in 3) women are murdered every day in South Africa by their intimate partner.

“While the attacks on women by men remain alarming, the most disturbing thing is that even in the South African Parliament, the legislative arm of our country, calls to stop femicide have fallen on deaf ears. In fact, this ANC MP has made an absolute mockery of Gender Based Violence (GBV) in his rantings against GBV during the plenary Parliament,” said the red beret.
