Algeria stun Netherlands with late winner in Rotterdam ahead of World Cup
Algeria claimed an impressive 1-0 victory over the Netherlands in a World Cup warm-up match in Rotterdam on Wednesday evening.
The hosts dominated large periods of the contest and created several chances, but were repeatedly frustrated by Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane, who produced a series of fine saves to keep the score level.
The son of France legend Zinedine Zidane was in inspired form throughout the match, denying the Dutch attack on numerous occasions as Algeria absorbed sustained pressure.
Despite seeing less of the ball and spending much of the game on the defensive, Algeria remained disciplined and dangerous on the counter-attack.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 86th minute when Anis Hadj Moussa produced a moment of quality to win the match.
The winger curled a superb left-footed effort into the top corner from outside the box, leaving the Dutch goalkeeper with no chance and silencing the home crowd.
The late goal proved decisive as Algeria held on during the closing minutes to secure a morale-boosting victory ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The result will give coach Vladimir Petkovic plenty of encouragement as his side prepares for the tournament in North America.
Algeria have been drawn in Group J alongside holders Argentina, Austria and Jordan and will head into the competition full of confidence after defeating one of Europe’s strongest teams.
For the Netherlands, the defeat was a disappointing end to their World Cup preparations despite producing an encouraging attacking display for much of the evening.
