Alfred Schreuder: Former Ajax boss in contention to become new Leeds manager | Football News

Former Ajax boss Alfred Schreuder is set to become Leeds United’s new head coach.

Schreuder was at Elland Road yesterday as Leeds lost 2-0 at home to Manchester United which left the club above the relegation zone.

Leeds have so far been frustrated in their search to find a successor to Jesse Marsch as their main target has been unavailable, but Schreuder, who replaced Erik ten Hag at Ajax, is available after being sacked last month.

Speaking in the program notes before the game yesterday, chief executive Angus Kinnear said: “The search for a new head coach is well underway.

“The task is to be able to align our prospect list – which has been built and developed over several seasons – with the current availability and openness of candidates to accept new roles in the middle of the season.

“When we have confidence in the caretaker team, we know the importance of quick appointments and, if [director of football] Victor (Orta) and I in any doubt, we have [chairman] Andrea’s (Radrizzani) Twitter account to keep the pressure on!”

Schreuder, 50, was appointed at Ajax on a two-year deal despite being sacked a fortnight ago after a seven-game league run without a win.

“It was a painful decision, but a necessary one,” Ajax chief executive Edwin van der Sar said.

“Regardless of the good start to the season, we lost a lot of unnecessary points. Football itself is also precarious.”
