MANILA, Philippines – Alex Eala dominated Spain’s Leyre Romero Gormaz, 6-1, 6-0 to start Trnava’s W60 campaign on an exciting note, Wednesday (Manila time) in Slovakia.
After a month-long holiday, the 17-year-old Filipina barely missed a beat as she quickly made it to the No.6 seed in the round of 32.
Eala defeated Romero Gormaz in the second set to advance to the round of 16, where she will face England’s Sonay Kartal.
Academy scholar Rafael Nadal will also see action in the doubles as he and Lithuania’s Justina Mikulskyte will face off. Ela Platenikova and Nina Vargova of Slovakia in the Round of 16.
Eala made her professional debut at the Roland Garros qualifying tournament and the Australian Open qualifier last January.
He is looking for his third crown at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) after the win W15 Manacor in 2021 and W25 Chiang Rai last year.
Eala won the President’s Award at the 2023 Philippine Sportswriters Association Awards on Monday night.
